“I never learned this stuff in school!”

It was a common phrase we heard over and over as we worked with families on their finances. The need for relatable, practical financial literacy seemed to come up with everyone we spoke to.

In early 2016, Philip and Julia began collaborating with Katie Graham and Andrew Matthews to develop a pilot for an educational financial series named, Two Cents. They hoped the show would be a place to offer an expert take on a financial topic each week – and make it fun!

The two couples self-produced the pilot episode, titled “How Cars Keep You Poor,” in summer 2016. And after a year of negotiations and contract discussions, PBS Digital offered to produce and distribute the series!

Two Cents is a light, short show that uses humor and animations to break down financial concepts and best-practices. It has used a melting ice-cream cone to help visualize “depreciation,” and connected the addictive nature of video games to the staying motivated to pay off debt. The episodes are released weekly and are always greeted with an enthusiastic response and a sigh of relief.

You can catch “Two Cents” on PBS.org or Facebook.
